Freelance Copyeditor
Posted: February 13, 2012
Short Description:
Berkshire Publishing seeks experienced copyeditor
Duties and Responsibilities:
Berkshire Publishing seeks an experienced copyeditor to work with our project coordinators and academic editors on upcoming volumes of the Encyclopedia of Sustainability, the Dictionary of Chinese Biography, and/or the Encyclopedia of World Sport. We pride ourselves on our ability to put expert-written articles on topics such as nanotechnology and environmental law into layperson's language, and we expect our copyeditors to be highly skilled at editing specialist content for general readers.
This position offers the chance to work with a great team, with ample opportunities to grow. Copyeditors will become fluent in our Berkshire Manual of Style for International Publishing, of which Library Journal wrote: The Chicago Manual of Style remains our bible, of course. But this supplementary mother lode of information is still a required purchase for anyone who works with words that will find their way to an international audience.
We also offer long-term opportunities for off-site work as production and/or managing editors for interested copyeditors who have appropriate qualifications, experience, and management skills.
We are an established and award-winning publisher of reference books focused on topics of global interest and relevance. Join our dedicated staff and freelance team as we develop an exciting array of publications designed to prepare high school and college students, scholars, business professionals, government officials, and general readers for the challenges and opportunities of the twenty-first century. Articles available for viewing on our website provide a sampling of our range.
Required Experience:
* ability to devote at least 15 - 20 hours a week on the Encyclopedia of Sustainability through May of this year (hours may fluctuate as we transition from a focus on one project to the next); * significant experience editing works written by academics, including non-native-English-speaking scholars; * skill for editing specialist content for general readers; * good judgment about when to research or fact-check details oneself and when to query an author, and skill for finding reliable answers quickly; * ability to absorb and rigorously apply all styles and standards set out in our copyediting manual, the Berkshire Manual of Style for International Publishing; * an eye for the big picture (we expect copyeditors to focus on the structure of an article as well as on consistency from article to article); * ability to summarize the main points of an article in an abstract, keeping web-search optimization in mind.
Please apply only if you meet the above criteria (we will not respond to applicants who do not meet our requirements).
Your application must address how you meet each of these criteria. Experience in reference publishing is desirable but not a requirement.
Salary/Hours:
The hourly rate is $16+, depending on background, experience, and, of course, performance. We tend to work with copyeditors for many years and have a highly dedicated and friendly team. Telecommuting is fine, as are flexible working hours, but we do expect timely responses to emails during the business day.
